Teeth whitening and why your teeth look like that
Your teeth are not supposed to be pure white. That is a myth.
Teeth are supposed to be off-white
When you visit the dentist they can assess how healthy your teeth are. Why is this relevant? The health of your teeth can impact their colour. For example, decay can make your tooth look black and no amount of teeth whitening treatment is going to solve that particular issue.
If your teeth are discoloured due to decay, then you may require a filling, porcelain veneer, or in some cases a dental crown.
Teeth whitening and dental restorations
If you have a tooth which is blackened by decay or has been stained internally for some other reason a porcelain veneer can be placed to cover the tooth.
A porcelain veneer is a thin shell of porcelain attached to the surface of your tooth. The porcelain is colour-matched to the shade of colour of your natural teeth. For this reason, your LARA dental dentist will ask if you’re happy with the colour and shade of your natural teeth before proceeding with veneers.
We do this, not to upsell a teeth whitening treatment but because porcelain restorations cannot be bleached. So if we colour-match a porcelain veneer and then you decide you want teeth whitening, the veneer is going to stick out.
Porcelain restorations and the health of your smile
Before you receive teeth whitening, porcelain veneers or any restorative dentistry, a thorough oral check-up is important. If you grind your teeth this would need to be treated before the placement of restorations.
It is your dentist’s job to ensure that, while you receive the treatment you want, you receive the treatment which is best suited for your oral health. At LARA dental we work closely with our patients to ensure they have optimal oral health and are fully informed about their options. Patient education is an important part of our practice, as an informed patient is much more likely to have better oral health.
